How can I get my child to sleep better?

The most important thing is to have good sleep hygiene. This means your child needs to have a good healthy bedtime routine. We recommend a set bedtime every night as we know that children need anywhere from 8-10 hours of sleep when younger. This bedtime should be enforced both on weekdays and weekends. No screen time 2 hours before bedtime as too much screen time especially before bedtime increases wakefulness and can make it harder to fall asleep. Your child should have had a good healthy dinner, rich in protein as this will prevent them from getting hungry during the night. Bedtime should be calming so a shower and a relaxing book are things parents can use to calm their child before bedtime.

How do I know how much sleep my child needs at night?

Creating that bedroom environment for a good night’s rest includes no screens in the bedroom, blackout curtains, and a cool temperature. Make sure your child is not too cold as that might prevent them from having a good night’s sleep. Choose a weekend that works for you and put your child to sleep at night and then let them sleep the next day until they wake up on their own. If your child wakes up fully rested and happy you can calculate how many hours, they slept the previous night and that should give you a good idea of how many hours your child needs. Remember if your child is not getting enough sleep, it will affect their behavior, mood, and functioning the next day.
